It is really interesting watching Charlie mature with his friends and the dynamic of friendships. He has so many friends and so many kids want to play with him. He is trying to figure out things that some kids know that he doesn’t. Like one boy keeps telling him that he is going to crash him and his mom and Charlie gets concerned and I tell him the other boy is tricking him and the other boy will say ‘”I’m just tricking,” but Charlie is still learning what tricking* means and tried to understand. I wish I was better at explaining stuff to him.

*Last night Charlie tricked me and said “I haven’t eaten any brownies,” while he had chocolate crumbs all over his face. I said “You’re telling me something that isn’t true.” To which he replied, “Oh.”

MJ was telling me my favorite joke about two peanuts walking down the street and one was a salted. Charlie piped in with “Knock knock. Whose there. A salted banana!”

The Cameroon embassy appear to have bird houses at their security check point. Security birds? I would like some. They chips really loudly when someone comes close.

The other night we passed a party bus that had purple lights and glowing stars inside. We explained to Charlie that it was a bus people take to party and he said “I think we should take that bus and I don’t have to be belted.”

Charlie has taken one guitar lessons far with Luis. He says he wants an electric guitar and drums. He went to see Peter and the Wolf at the Kennedy Center and kept yelling out during the performance “There’s Peter!” “The hunter ha a gun and is going to kill the wolf!” “This is scary!” “I’m not scared!” “I don’t want to watch this anymore!”

Afterwards he got to try a violin, cello, bassoon, oboe, clarinet, and drums. He looooved that. And loved a guy dressed up as a mouse conductor. WhatI loved was spending time alone with Charlie and Charlie saying “You like doing things with me, right? And having fun with me.”

Teddy always brings over a book and says “Read it.” He has now begin saying “Read it” if I pause in the middle of telling a story or singing a song. If he hasn’t snuck away to do something he shouldn’t be doing, he is off reading.

I could have gone to a party with Kehinde Wiley and one with Pharell but instead I feed two babies and watched TV with MJ. I enjoyed it more.

I recently spoke on a little panel about applying to preschool and a day later a panel about women and digital media. I think I got the topics confused.

I was telling Charlie about how I used to ride horses and he asked “Did they have saddles then?”
